.... I was hoping you would change....

Those 6 words made an argument that Arnold and I were having even worse!

Remember those sayings "Can't teach an old dog new tricks?"  or "You can never change a man who is set in his ways"

Well... Arnold said this to me during an argument we were having about me needing things planned out.  He thought I would change from before we got married.

It got me thinking.

Would I change?  Would I ever be able to not have things planned out?  Would I ever be one of those people who could just jump in a car and go?

Nope!

Sorry guys!  I need to plan things out.

I lose sleep over things.  Just ask the people I work with!  I started stressing over something with our kitchen and I literally was up from 2am on thinking my lights wouldn't work.  My co-worker, who is helping with the house, had to draw it out on the white board at work and tell me it would be fine.

Yes, I'm a freak.

I know!

I need to have things organized, and put in it's place.  It may not be a place you know about but it's a place I know about.  I can tell you where almost any paperwork is in my house.  It may not be in the proper bins and the proper labels but I know where it is.

Do you really hope people will change?

Sometimes we pretend.

Sometimes we pretend it's just something we would like to encourage the person to "grow" in that direction.  We may want our children to "grow" and become more responsible.  If it happens YEAH!  if it doesn't... well yeah.

Sometimes we pretend that character flaw is what we love about them.  While I may need to have everything planned out and ordered and ready to go, it comes in handy sometimes!  I am great when it comes to packing for big trips, or getting money organized and budgeting.  I'm wonderful at that.  But making sure child care is figured out before we go on a date (and I mean like 2 days before) makes me mad that it's not done.

I remember shortly after we lost Otis, we went on a date.  Arnold and I weren't more than 1 km from the house and I flipped out "Why do I have to plan everything!"

And see that?

Right there...

That was when I wanted him to change.

Will he?  No

Will he learn from that?  maybe!

Will I still love him even if he never changes?  ABSOLUTLY!

And that is the most important thing.  I may not change.  We have been married for almost 11 years now and I will not change.  And thank the Lord, Arnold won't change either.  I love him for all he is.

Hi! Have you met the most amazing man?

Hey!

Have you met the most amazing man?  A man who does everything and anything?

No really!  He does!

Sometimes it's not until you don't have something that you recognize how "lucky/blessed" you are.

When Arnold and I moved to Toronto and we were making friends I'd tell them about Arnold and the things he does for our family.  A lot of the time I'd get the following responses:

"No way!  How long did it take to train him?"

"You know if he came from a box that way you'd make millions"

"You are so lucky!"

"When you are done with him, pass him over!"

"What's he doing this weekend?  Could he hang out with my husband... maybe something will rub off and my husband can be more like yours"

To be honest... it never really clicked.

YES!  My husband is incredible.

YES!  I know this!

NO!  I didn't "train/teach/bribe/withhold" anything to get this

NO!  I'm not sharing.

He is the glue that holds our family together

Arnold is not only the one that makes this house work, by working.  But he is the one who can smooth things over with everyone.  Sometimes my brother drives me crazy!  And lets be real, this happens to everyone.  But not everyone lives with their brother.  We do, and are SOOO lucky!  He is awesome for the boys.  He is so great with them and we love it.  But sometimes we grate on each other.  This is where one of Arnold's amazing powers comes in.  He can talk to Jack about things that bore me to death.  He can talk to Jack about things that are pissing me off.  And more so, Arnold can be a friend when the time is needed.

Arnold is gone this week, as I've said before.  And hey!  I figured, single parenting would be fun right?  No.  My first night alone ended up with a little boy in my bed because he had an accident.  And I'm sure you can figure out all the work that comes with that!

But I've learned more of the things he does around our house.

For example........

*I knew tomorrow was a "garbage day" but not which garbage day.  Is it a GARBAGE day?  or a RECYLCING day?  Was it both?

Once I figured out it was an actual garbage day, I figured no big deal.

*then came finding the bags for the garbage.

Who knew those were all downstairs in one spot (yes, he does every single garbage bag in my house!)

*After that came the realization that the compost had to go out and I wasn't 100% sure where those bags were kept.

Found them!

*I realized the floor was getting icky and should be swept......

Guess who does that normally? Yep... Arnold.  Guess it's me this week.

*Our recycling can was "throwing up" in the kitchen....

And another "Arnold job".

There is so much he does around here.

I forgot to lock up last night and had to come back upstairs to make sure the doors were locked up because this is another job Arnold does.

Eating dinner and having to put my own dishes away.

Yes, I am that lucky.

Way more than I thought.

I am so glad our boys have Arnold as an example of what a man/husband should be like.  Sometimes these examples are few and far between.  But Arnold is in their lives every day.  He shows them how to treat their wives by how he treats me.  He shows them how to be an incredible uncle by how he treats our nieces.  He shows them how to be neighbourly by hanging out with the neighbourhood kids/families.  He leads by example when helping in our school.

So, I'm not the "lucky" one.  I'm not "spoiled".

I'm married to an incredible man.  An amazing man.  A Godly man. A man who loves me...

And a man who I love more than I ever thought possible.

Single parenting

I'm not an expert by any means.

I'm not an expert in parenting, teaching, marriage, music, ANYTHING!!

I don't pretend to be an expert.  I may know a lot but I'm not an expert.

This week I am experiencing something I have always known I could never do.  Ever.

I am going to be a 'single parent'.

Arnold is heading out for the week.  He is attending a computer conference in San Francisco.

And I am going to be mommy and daddy this week.

Its a busy week for us.  We have basketball tonight.  Tomorrow is cooking club.  Thursday is swimming.  And Friday night my friend is taking the kids to the indoor playground.

Not only that but we have picture day on Thursday and pizza day on Friday!!  That should help this week fly by.

While I will not have to deal with the kids with no help this week (I will have some help from friends - my brother is doing 12-7 shifts every day this week), and will not be doing it all on my own, it is my married version of single parenting.

I pray Arnold loves his time there and learns a lot.  I also pray that I can make it through the week with the boys.

So here we go!  Let's see how I can handle it!!

Accidents happen

So Thursday was our anniversary!  I promise to post about that later but right now I'm here to talk about Arnold.

I got my normal text 'heading out' and I responded with 'see you soon.  Love you'.  The next time I heard from Arnold was 20 minutes later.  It was some woman calling and saying "is this Miranda?  I'm here with your husband Arnold.  He has been in an accident".  In my hear I thought , oh he fell and needs a ride home.  But nope.  This time it was serious.

" the ambulance is here"

My heart stopped.  I don't remember breathing.

I went into mama mode.  I had her call me back with details.  The kids threw on their shoes and we ran to Lori's house.  We were off.  I was pounding on her door and about to call her cell when she answered.  All I remember saying was Arnold was in an accident and was heading to a hospital.  She grabbed my babies and hugged them.

I was gone.

The rest of my night was a blur.  Trying to get into the er.  Trying to get to Arnold.  Trying to get the Dr to explain what was going on.  Xrays and ct scans.  I was tired.

Thankfully we are OK.

Arnold is home now.  We are getting him moving.

He has some broken ribs, some brutal road rash and three deep cuts I need to take care of.

Its going to be a long road to recovery.

We are learning new pieces of info on the way.

Arnold's bike is completely trashed.  There is no way we could ever fix it.  The guys are surprised he is out of the hospital already... Or even alive.

Arnold blacked out for most of it.  We are OK with that.  Less pain to remember.

We totally know God was looking out for him.

Now we wait, rest, and slowly recover.

Happy Christmas!!

What a crazy few months this has been for us!  We have done so much in such a short period of time.  Here's a uber quick update:

Arnold - has been amazing and has bought our family a house, ripped up the flooring and a diving wall, redone the wall and ceiling, redone a new flooring, dealt with plumbing and a few other random things (the joys of owning a home!!)  He is doing ok at work.  We just had his kids Christmas party this past weekend.  All in all he is keeping busy

Kyler - Is really enjoying grade 3.  He loves Fridays when he gets gumballs if he was a good kid that week.  We got his report card and there are a few things for him to work on but generally doing ok.  His favourite thing is to watch mindcraft youtube videos right now.

Quinton - loves loves loves mindcraft.  He is our little builder man.  He has spent hours building and destroying things on mindcraft.  He is doing well in school and loves playing with others.  Right now he is working on his printing.  We hope it gets better as time goes on.

Me - I'm doing ok.  Keeping super busy but it's going ok.  I'm down to one job now (only working at TDSB instead of at Forward as well) but enjoying it a lot!  I'm getting extra hours and slowly working on getting our house unpacked.

So for the general gist:

We started "looking" at home around the last weekend in September.  We got a phone number of someone who would be selling a house the Thursday before the long weekend.  Went to look at that house on the long weekend, put an offer in on the Monday (I believe) and had everything settled by that Friday.  It was such a short period.  We closed on the house October 22nd and began working on the house.   The carpet needed to come out, and the tiling in the basement, as well as the ceiling in the basement.  We had to put in new flooring (right down to the subfloor) upstairs, and put in some new carpet in the basement.

So far it's going ok.  It's "odd" owning a home but I'm loving it!

I'll do more of a home post soon but for now that's where we are!  Tonight we started our first day of advent with the boys and their lego advent calendar that daddy rushed out to get this morning.  Mama's been slacking on these things.

I'm excited to see how December goes for our Christmas time, as well as our first Christmas time in our new home!

I think next year we may stay in Toronto and celebrate here!!

Anyway... happy Christmas!!  I'll be back again soon, I promise :)

What a Summer!

I'm sure this is a crazy post to be putting up but I feel like our summer is over!  I don't mean like our summer is actually over but it sure feels like it.

Our summer has been a world wind of adventure.

It started the day school was over!  Arnold and Quinton headed to Edmonton/Calgary and went to visit family.  It's a tradition for our family to go and visit Alberta family.  When the boys "Graduate" they get to go.  Since there is a graduation ceremony for the kids from SK to grade 1 our boys get excited to go to Alberta.

While the big and little boy were in Alberta I was in Sarnia with Kyler!  We had a great few days there.  Between playing in the pool, having friends over for Canada Day, going to church and visiting our vacation was packed full.

We came home in time for Kyler to get his first tooth pulled from the dentist and for me to work for a few days.

Kyler and I picked up Arnold and Quinton and our fun began!

We had 2 days as our family of 4 and then the fun arrived!

Amber and Lisa arrived and we started the fun.  We did our first week at Forward Baptist Church for Kingdom Rock!  It was so much fun.  It was a half-day day camp.  We got there at 9am and then we were home around noon.  The kids had a lot of fun.  And cute t-shirts to prove it!

That weekend we chilled out and played at home.  Sunday brought us into a new week.

A New week of fun!

We started the Zoo camp.  Zoo Camp was for everyone!  All 4 of them headed out at 8:25am and I picked them up at 3:30pm.  We had a lot of fun.  Every day the kids came home with something new they had learned and were excited to start it all over again.  They had a great time and really enjoyed the Pandas.

That Saturday morning Aunt B came and picked up the girls.  So started our week alone.  While it was alone things got crazy!  We didn't really get any downtime but hey, that happens, right?

We headed to Sarnia on Friday.  Kyler, Quinton and I went to get Arnold from work.  Since he works late Monday to Thursday he gets to leave half day Fridays.  We were on the road and very little traffic!  It was great.  We stopped in Cambridge and picked up the girls early and then we were *so* quick that we even stopped and dropped off the coats that needed to be repaired at the Columbia headquarters in London.

The 6 of us arrived in Sarnia in time to see the moving truck moving out the last of my grandparents things from my parents house.  While on the way home my mom had texted me and told me they were thinking of moving.

I went into high gear that week.  I worked on the basement on Saturday and Sunday and we got the rooms cleaned up, took 4 trips to Goodwill and even got some taping done to paint a few areas in the house.  Monday I finished up the rest and got some painters out to work on the house.  The Student Painters came out and did our house and I got a "break" on Friday.

During this week the kids were at Temple Baptist Day Camp.  This year was so much fun for the 4 of them.  I dropped them off around 8:50am or so and picked them up around 4-4:30pm.  They had a blast!  While we did have to visit the lost and found table at least 3 of the 5 days it was still a great time by all.  I really loved hearing the things they had learned and how much fun they had.

By Friday we had a great pool night.  The kids played in the pool ALL NIGHT!  Finally, after doing glow in the dark time, I kicked them off to bed around 10:15pm or so.

Saturday morning Becca started her trip down to Sarnia.  The plan was to do some shopping for the kids.  You know... Back to school shopping :)  Becca ended up having a tire blow on her van and no spares.  We had to send backup (ie Arnold and Dad).  They went out and fixed her up.  All in all it took about 3 hours more than expected.

Mom had to go to work by then so Arnold, Kyler, Quinton, Becca, Amber, Lisa, and myself hit the malls.  We went to Children's place, payless, Wal-Mart, Bonnie Togs, and home again.  Lots of crazy times.  We got almost everything.  I have to say the "Do you really need that?  If you buy it Auntie M is getting rid of the SAME out fit you have at home" works :)  Got to love carrying the money from mom and dad :)

We got home and showed our treasures off to Nana and Papa.  Then Aunt B and Arnold headed out to get our vans fixed.  Ours was there but Beccas needed a new tire for it.

All of us headed out that night.  It worked out well as my parents listed their house on the Sunday night.

We had a few days to chill and just veg in front of the TV or elsewhere.  I think the kids really needed it.  This is the first summer things have seemed so hard core.  It was great for me as I really needed to get work done and having them in camps during the day was fantastic.

Monday evening (after we had a great lunch with friends) Aunt B brought the girls back over for the week.

This week they are doing Swim Camp.  So far it's been a bust but hey!  Tuesday they showed up and the pool had no chlorine in it.  It was horrible.  Wednesday it still wasn't fixed.  So I had to sign a waver saying the kids could go on the bus and go elsewhere for their lessons.  No big deal for me.  Wednesday was ok since they were all out at the Toronto Island.  They had a great time.

Lisa and I are chilling.  See, she is too little to go!  So instead she has hung out with Uncle Jack one day, then a babysitter (Anna) the next.  And today we are going to the movies.  If only Auntie M could read the right movie theater we would be set.  hopefully I've got it right now.

Sunday morning everyone comes here and we do our family day at the zoo.  We are pretty excited.

Oh and this week... my parents sold their house and bought a new one!  Their closing date for both houses is August 30th.  Our last day on the houseboat!  Was an exciting week!

Because of the sale being so quick it means that Arnold and I are not getting our week alone with no kids.  I have to work (I need the hours as I'm not working the last week in August).  So I'm going into work on Monday and Tuesday.  Thankfully there is no bulletin to be done so I'm just going to be getting those little pesky things done that need to get done.  Hopefully it helps get the office in order.

Right now (which means things ALWAYS change) I'm thinking of heading out on  Tuesday around noon or so.  I'm hoping it gives me light traffic.  I'll head to Sarnia and start packing.  I'll pack Tuesday night, Wednesday and Thursday.  I'm aiming to come home on Thursday night and have a half a day with Arnold and no kids.  Then we will pick them up in Cambridge on Saturday, as planned.

This is where our family of 6/7 ends.  Amber and Lisa get to hang out with their grandparents for a week and our boys are doing the Boys and Girls Day camp at the end of the road.  I'm really excited for them.  Their adventure is going to the movies!!

During the week I'm going to be working at church (hopefully getting 4 bulletins done in one week) and then, if time allows, decluttering my house!

Becca, Amber, and Lisa arrive on Thursday night!  Arnold, Kyler, Quinton and I will be taking Lisa up to the boat and Becca will come on Saturday with Amber and Jack.  Mom and Dad will be arriving then as well.  We are out on the boat for a bit.  Mom and Dad need to come back on the Wednesday.  We have the boat until Friday.  Then we all head down and help them finish moving.

I believe we are going to stay in Sarnia that weekend and "camp" in their new big backyard!  Finally we get to camp AND use the tent we got 2 Christmases ago!!  (I'm excited for this!)

We will head back to Toronto on Monday and Tuesday... School starts.

See how our summer seems a bit crazy?

The Race Begins...

It's official.  The Race Begins Today!!

You know that race I'm talking about... the one where you are going somewhere and need to get backed up and ready to go.  In our house it actually started on Sunday when I had Arnold take out the suitcases.  Then they sat around for a bit until Arnold put them in the "proper rooms" for everyone.

Then this morning Jack headed out.  He is going home to Sarnia tonight instead of tomorrow with us.  He has a few things he needs to get done and is heading out faster.  So instead of hauling his suitcase with him to work then on the train he packed up his backpack with some PJ's and a days worth of clothes.  We will be bringing his suitcase with us (which is now sitting at the front door so we dont' forget!)

But this afternoon/evening, our craziness begins.

Today, before bed, I need to get the boys to pack all their stuff for the Easter weekend at my parents house.  Which needs to include 1 "nice" outfit, 1 "semi-nice" outfit, and 2 days of "other" clothes.  Socks, underwear, pjs and "must sleep with toy" are always a must.  As well as their homework (which will come home tomorrow).

Then I need to pack myself up and get ready to go.

But the worst has to be packing my husband.  Mainly cause I don't... and then it's this mad rush for him to get his bags packed.. which always results in "hunny can you grab..." text messages.  Not that it's a problem, I'm just blessed I can be home to do this for him, but also that everyone else sends the same message

So tonight... the race begins.. we need to pack up our clothes and get moving!!  For this weekend we are in Sarnia for the Easter Bunny!!

Marriage Mondays ~ Notes of Love

Most, if not all, of these Marriage Mondays will be coming from my point of view.  It's hard to get my hubby to sit down and write something out.  Sometimes things you dream about never happen.  Kidding.  I've actually never dreamed about him writing it my blog.  It would almost be like an invasion of my "world".

One of the things we learned at our weekend was how to get things done around the house.  They related it back to having children and getting them to do things.  One of the suggestions was to get things done was to put post-it notes across the TV.  Or anywhere that your child spends alot of time.  Have the child complete each post-it note and remove it from the screen. Once they are all removed the child may watch TV or do whatever they wanted.

When *I* heard this my reaction was "Heck yes!  I could SO use this for K and Q".

But.. when Arnold heard this, it translated into something completely different.

Part of the reason for the Post-it notes was to have the child to complete task when you couldn't be there to walk them step by step.  When you, giving commands, right after each other, isn't possible you could use the Post-it notes.

Arnold took this to heart.

A few weeks ago all of us were around the kitchen table and the boys were having special pops upstairs.  I wanted my normal diet coke but it was in the basement.  Instead of the boys getting it, Arnold volunteered.  And here's what I got:

Ever since then I've been enjoying being told "you are my sunshine" from my husband and from my youngest son.  Quinton saw how happy I was to get that note and how it's displayed on my fridge.  Now Quinton has taken to writing it everywhere: in the snow; on a window (so you have to breath on it to find the note); on paper from school.  Pretty much everywhere now.

Another example of how my husband has used post-it notes was just last week.  I had the WORST morning ever.  Things just kept going wrong.  I smashed my foot, didn't have clean clothes, forgot my bp meds and had to go back to the basement, came upstairs to a DIRTY kitchen and laundry overflowing.  It was so frustrating.

I didn't want to have anything to do with my husband that day.  I was mad that he hadn't moved the weight I smashed my foot into.  I was mad that my brother didn't unload the dishwasher... which meant my husband didn't load the dishwasher.  I was mad that Arnold didn't take the time to unload and load the dishwasher.  I was mad that the pots and pans I had used to "slave" over dinner the night before weren't washed (an Arnold job).  I was mad.  I was just completely mad.

Arnold knew it.  He knew there was NOTHING he could to do make me happy that morning.  He even tried loading the dishwasher but he was loading things I had already unloaded and knew needed to be hand washed not put back in again.  He was at a loss.

So as my husband left for work he left me some love notes.  I found this one as I was getting the kids ready for school:

It was so sweet.  I really did smile.

My day got better at school and when I came home with Q and my daycare girl.  I always check the mail and today I got the best thing ever:

It was perfect.  Arnold knew just how to tell me what he wanted to (ie that he loves me and that I'm amazing) even though I wasn't ready to hear it in the morning.

I'm always surprised how I can take one thing (post-it notes for your children to do jobs) and my husband can take it and turn it into something totally different (leaving me love notes around the house).

Today, take a few minutes and leave a love note for your better half.  Tell them something you want them to know.  For some help, something like... I love you; You are amazing; I'm in love with you; Thank you for being you; Take your clothes off..... well that may lead to something TOTALLY different!

Marriage Monday ~ Connecting with Your Husband

First off I want to say, I am NO expert.  At all.  Not even in things I want to pretend I am.  I still refer to people, the Internet, my mom, other parents and most of all God and the Bible for most of my information.  It could be anything from needing help with my laundry (mom) to what to do about my kids in school (other parents).  But I do NOT claim to be an expert.  At all.

Now with that being said:

I've thought about this for a while and thought it was time to start doing something semi regular in my blog.  These Marriage Mondays may seem out of date compared to when you read them, and they most likely are.  I've completed some of these things in the month before I have posted it on the blog.  Not only does it give me some time to get caught up but it gives me some time to see how things went.

Today's topic, Connecting with Your husband.

I thought I was connected with my husband.  Completely.  Totally.  I knew what he wanted, when he wanted it and how he wanted it... but I was SO wrong.

My husband went to a men's retreat a few months ago at Muskoka Bible Centre.  When he was there the centre was beginning their "push" for the marriage weekend.  Arnold came home thinking, hey, this could be fun!  He wanted to try it.  I was about 4 months pregnant with Otis.  I told him if he wanted to do it he was going to have to find childcare and we were going to have to use our birthday money to pay for it.  He was all on board, so that meant I was as well.

When we were in the hospital just before Otis was born I was telling Arnold to cancel.  Cancel it now, and see if we could get our money back.  There was *no* way we could have a preemie and go away for the weekend.  I just couldn't do it.

After Otis passed away we chose to use this weekend as our weekend to "check in" with each other.  Jan 18th-20th was about 2 months from when I went into the hospital so it was a good time to check in and see how we were doing.  We wanted to  use this time as a chance to exchange gifts with each other and to see how we were both doing.  Away from the kids.

This meant it was our first time being away from the kids as well...  Arnold's childcare was changed from my parents to my brother (thank you Jack!).  We have never gone away with just the 2 of us since we got married almost 9 years ago.  So really, truly this was perfect time to go away.

Back to the weekend...

We headed out Friday around 3pm.  We quickly did some running around and were on the road.  We stopped in Orillia for supper.  It was lightly snowing when we went in.  You know those cute flakes?  Well when we came out about a half hour/hour later it was all over the car and we went from driving 110Km/h on the highway to driving more like 85km/h if we were lucky.  It was bad.

Now for those who know me I'm not one for driving in bad weather.  I hate it.  HATE it.  I know I know it's not that bad, cars are safe, ect.  But I just don't like it at all.  So to pass the time and help me relax Arnold and I talked about random things.  Really completely random things.

We got to MBC just in time to sign in (7pm) and find our room.  Arnold parked the car and we dropped everything off.  We were in this little motel room.  Queen bed, 2 night side tables, a tall table, a 3 piece bathroom and a comfy chair.  It had sliding doors at the back of the motel room and a view of the lake.  So beautiful.

We got all the things in from the car and then headed out for snacks.  We got something to drink, some cookies and then went to session #1.

Our speakers were Bill and Pam Farrel.  They were great.  I really did enjoy their sessions.  The worship team was incredible.  JUST what I needed this weekend.  The first session was giving us a overview of their book (Men are like Waffles Women are like Spaghetti).  And kinda going into the differences.

Men think like Waffles... the Waffle is a box.. .every box is something else.  And as Bill explained it, when men get older they can travel from box to box faster, which makes them look like they are multi tasking.  There are different boxes.  There is the "Nothing" box (where they are thinking nothing), the "Happy" box (could be sports, something they enjoy), the "Bingo" box (sex), the "Children" box (each kid has a box including things like what they like, age, ect), the "Budget" box, the "Jobs Around The House" box, ect.

Women think like Spaghetti.  If you put a piece of spaghetti on a plate you see it winds and curls and connects/touches almost every other strands.  Everything we think is connected.  For example you might start a conversation like "At work today my friend called and asked me to go for coffee.  So we went to this little shop down the road that has those cute curtains.  They remind me of the ones in Sue's house.  You know in the spare room?  They have those yellow and purple together.  You know, yellow and purple dont' always look good together.  I'm more of a yellow and blue kind of girl.  but not that yellow like the sun, more like yellow like gold.  And blue like the sky.  They look good together.  I really think Brad and Tyler look good together, don't you think?  Such a cute couple.  And those pictures they took this summer.  I wonder if that photographer could do our photos, maybe couple ones?  We haven't had our own photos done since our wedding."  As you can see this conversation connect everything from Work - friends - coffee- shop- curtains - Sue's house - spare room - colours - gold - blue - together - friends - photos - ect....  To a girl it's a normal train of thought.  To a guy this is so confusing... a million different boxes!

Anyway... we learned about how to communicate with each other.  It was really a great session.  That night we went back to our room and exchanged our "Christmas" gifts with each other.  Arnold got me this shirt I wanted.  REALLY wanted.  But I just couldn't do it.  So Arnold went back to the store and bought it for me!  I got him a years worth of dates.  Every month we are going somewhere different.  And it ensures we actually GO/DO something.

Over the weekend we learned more about how to communicate within our marriage (small talk, thought sand ideas, opinions and convictions and emotional connections), how to be a great listener, having safe words with each other for fights, freaking out, how to deal with stress in your home, how we are motivated, how to resolve conflict (since we each do it differently), how to approach conflict, how to forgive, and how to romance each other (again).

Each time we had a break at the camp we would talk with each other about what we learned and what we thought.  On the way home we had 3-4 hours of talking about what we had learned.  It was our way to re-connect with my husband.  We talked about the past, the present and what we thought about for our future.  It was fantastic.  I loved having time to find out more about my husband.

I challenge you to ask your husband, what are his favourite "boxes"?  Find out where he likes to "stay" on his waffle and remember it.  When it's a long hard day suggest a "box" to him.  Or make that box possible for him.

Connect with your husband today.  If nothing else give him 5 minutes of eye contact and listen to him.

And if at all possible, get a weekend away like we did!

Here's just a few photos from our weekend:

Is he not the most handsome man in the whole world?  I think so

First Times

I have been experiencing alot of "first times" lately.

There was the 1st time seeing the OB on Monday and not being pregnant
The 1st time going to the BP dr on Thursday with no one but my trusty man Q
The 1st time my meds have changed alot
The 1st time going to swimming lessons with the boys and seeing my friend who is having her baby this weekend
The 1st time going to my own swimming lessons and having to tell everyone that we lost the baby (it was known that we were pregnant)
The 1st time having to seriously explain to someone that if I did get pregnant again I could die
The 1st time going clothes shopping and actually knowing this was my size, no more "pre-post" baby body.  This is it (and getting better!)
The 1st time leaving the boys home with their uncle for a whole weekend!
The 1st time going on a couples retreat
The 1st time telling people we have "2 boys at home and 2 babies in heaven".

Alot of "1st times".

And I have to say, I may not have enjoyed every single one of them, but I'm slowly growing through them all.

Dr Appointments

As I'm sure you've had alot of posts about our family and our sweet baby Otis, this is another one, of sorts.

I had my 6 week appointment today.  My sweet little boy would have been 6 weeks old (well almost 7), if everything had worked out.  Don't get me wrong, I wanted a full term healthy baby but if he had survived his birthday, he would be 6 weeks old by now.

Today I met with our INCREDIBLE ob.  She was wonderful!  I love her and her staff so much.  They booked me knowing what had happen on a day when there were NO pregnant women in the office, no blaring "you didn't have a baby and I am" feelings.  I got in before my appointment and out just after what would have been my appointment time.  She helped us set up future appointments (yes, it's true I'm "making" my husband get the "Big V", and I am to come and see her next fall).  We talked about how I'm doing medically, how my body is and what's going on with us.  We joked about how things have been going since then and what will be happening next.

All in all a great visit.  She really is a wonderful ob.

Now I wait, 3 more days, and I have another appointment.  My appointment with my BP dr is on Thursday afternoon.  I always have "high" bp in her office.  I'm not going to lie, putting an internal med dr with special interest in pregnancies, pre and post, on the labour and delivery floor, GREAT idea... but for the rest of us, it sucks.  My BP is high when I see her, but perfect to low at home.

I have a feeling this visit (or the next) we will be changing my doses.  I'm good with that.  I'm finding I'm low at night, but it could just be the night time.  For now we wait and see.  This appointment I'm taking my "warrior" with me... Quinton!  He loves this dr so it should be good.

And then I get some time off (most likely I'll see my BP dr again in 3 to 4 weeks but I do get "some" time off).  I'm looking forward to things getting semi normal again.

New Years Party Part 2

First of all

HAPPY NEW YEARS!

I hope that your New Year Eve was wonderful!  We had fun.  So to add to my photos from before here's kinda how it went:

We started at 5pm with the boys (see the balloon).  Q got to pop it (we used a fondue fork) and then we got started on our hunt!  Arnold delivered the gifts beforehand and we went on our walk to check them all out!

First was mag lights.  But somehow I didn't get a picture uploaded..

Second was airplanes:

After that was glowing glasses for us to see a bit better!

Then we had bubbles.  When it's freezing out you can get the bubbles to freeze!  So we did try but no luck:

We got home and Arnold had some time to read a book with the boys.  They are so cute.  Each of them began reading parts they remembered (for Q) or actually read some pages (for K)

Kyler popped 6 o'clock's balloon and we began our fondue:

And I just couldn't resist sharing this photo:

Quinton popped the 7 o'clock one and we began some Wii Games.  Everyone one a trophy:

Quinton didn't want to play wii but instead he won for the best hair!  Seriously it was GREAT :)

Kyler popped 8 o'clock and we had our meat fondue.  It was so good.  We also got to put on our "fat pants" AKA PJ's and we put on our new socks:

We had dinner and it went a bit longer than expected, and Q wasn't up for 9 o'clock (which was going for a walk) so we hung out at home.  But Uncle Jack did get to pop and K read it upside down for us:

Kyler popped our next balloon and we had dessert!  The chocolate was SOOO good!

After our dessert we ended up getting 11pm a bit earlier.  We got the bed ready for the boys (the couch) and we hung out until midnight:

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

New Years Eve PARTY!

Hey Readers,

Things have been a bit crazy here.  I've wanted a bit of time to recover from losing Otis, then end of the year at school, Christmas, and now I'm hoping for a fantastic new year.

I did some "pinterest" checking about things to do to celebrate new years.  I wanted something good to do for our family.  So I came up with some plans.

First off, I decorated our tree.  Today we "undecorated" the tree from Christmas things and tonight, while
the boys were napping I redecorated it with a New Years Theme:

It's all decorated with necklaces, noise makers, horns, "2013" glasses, hats, and balloons.

I am so excited for the kids to see the tree :)

There are balloons starting at 5pm and they look like this:

One side has "5pm" on it along with a hint about what we will be doing during that hour, and then on the other side is clock.  Kyler can read the clock (or is learning) and Quinton can read the time written out.  The kids pop the balloons and then find out what we are doing.  Each balloon has a little write up of what we will be doing.  For example... 5pm is a "the fun begins!  Head out on a hunt and see what joys you can find"

The kids will then head out on a hunt around the neighbourhood.  They start at our house with a clue and continue on to the next 4 houses we know.  Each house will have a bag with a treat and a balloon:

We got them new flashlights
They will get little airplanes
Glow in the dark glasses!
Bubbles, but they will freeze when it's below 0 :)

When they get back they will do 6pm (Fondue begins - cheese and bread) and we will talk about their goals for 2013:

Then at 7pm we are doing some Wii games/board games with the kids.  They are really into it now.  And we have a little container with some trophies in it for them, as well as the container will be our families time capsule

8pm we will be doing the Meat Fondue.  Arnold is VERY excited for this part.  The kids will be encouraged to put on their "fat pants" (ie pjs) and new socks:

9pm is time to walk around the neighbourhood and see the lights.  They will be given some glow sticks to go out and walk around:

10pm we will have dessert fondue (fruit and chocolate and marshmallow dip) and make some noise makers:

11pm is movie time!  I could only think of one movie that is a new years theme in it.  It's WTP Seasons Greetings.  We will watch it and the boys get to have their own bowls and fill them with goodies (goodies are still packed away)

11:45pm we will be undecorating the tree.  Getting some hats, noise makers, necklaces, and the poppers :)

Then once the movie is over we send the kiddos to bed, and us too!

Thank goodness for my waffle maker!  I've made a batch and put them in the freezer for quick breakfast on the 1st!

Anyway I hope I have given you some hope and maybe some ideas for next year.

Happy New Years!  May this coming year be better than the last. May God grant us the wisdom to use the experiences from 2012 to make us better people in 2013.
